Facilitator's Corner

Tips, Tricks, and Testimonials

What is a facilitator? A facilitator is any person who organizes and facilitates group classes. Facilitators need no prior art experience and learn as they go along with the students! As one facilitator said, “It was easy for me as a facilitator to follow along and be able to coach them in something I knew nothing about; because I don’t even draw stick people. So this was a wonderful experience for me as well!”

What does a facilitator do? They buy the program, with enough supplies for every student in the group, set up the class and then the main job of the facilitator is to make sure that people are focused and following along. This means checking on participants through-out each step and making sure that they are paying attention and applying the important instructions.

TIPS:

  1. Encourage positivity! For some people this might be the first art class they’ve ever taken and they may feel discouraged by their lack of artistic experience- reinforce that they can do it and remind them it’s a learning process.
  2. We have a “cheat sheet” for Facilitators which comes with the program. Be sure to review each step on the cheat sheet before working with the class on the step.
  3. Watercolor paintings are meant to be seen from a distance, so always review paintings from about 5 feet away!
  4. Facilitators shouldn’t attempt to paint the painting while facilitating. We find that facilitators are best utilized when groups have their full attention as they may need help through-out the video.

We strongly believe that these tips will create an environment that allows for groups to get the most out of their watercolor art experience.

Karen’s Story

Meet Karen Dehart, the Vibrant Life Director at Overland Court Assisted Living Center, and her amazing group of seniors. She recently had the opportunity to bring Say Yes to Art into her community, and expose her residents to a brand new experience of watercolor. Although somewhat hesitant at first, Karen and her amazing group of seniors had a blast with the program and finished with fantastic masterpieces to share with their family and friends.
