Benefits of Art for Seniors

Senior Citizen Art Class

I initially developed “Say Yes to Art” to bridge the art education gap in elementary schools which arose from lack of art funding in schools. I realized that teaching art to kids not only resulted in beautiful finished masterpieces, but it also had the effect of expanding the minds and character of children in ways I never imagined. I also saw that my teaching method resulted in positive self-awareness and self-esteem and a sense of courage and confidence in pushing outside the comfort zone. Little did I know that the same ideals behind creating an art program for children would also stand true, every bit as much, for seniors.

Many seniors may feel as though they can “barely draw stick figures” or that it is too late to take up a new interest, especially something as intimidating and seemingly out of reach as art. However, research and the results arising from art programs for seniors proves otherwise. Scientific studies suggest the arts can offer health benefits no pill can provide. Seniors who participate in art are generally happier, healthier and more mentally sharp. Other studies show a reduction in depression and anxiety and an increase in relaxation. But perhaps the biggest advantage is that art provides seniors with a sense of purpose and meaning that many other programs fail to do. Seniors are in an incredible position in life to learn how to become great artists. They generally have the time and the deep life experience and spirit to create beautiful masterpieces. Working on growing into a real artist bolsters problem-solving skills and satisfaction that seniors can take into everyday life. Also, when seniors can share their paintings with friends and family, they develop a sense of pride and legacy in what they have created. Art is also something seniors can do with their friends and family, enhancing their feelings of community and connection. The possibilities are endless!

We are offering Say Yes to Art in senior homes everywhere and are so excited to see and share the results of this program.
